Ah, if you want to make different defaults, you use SimPE. If you're just making additional recolors, then Bodyshop is the way to go! With that, you don't have to worry about the transparency -- the black and white alpha image is what applies it.

If you're making different defaults, then you will need a transparent png, yes. Pooklet's actions will still flatten the image, there's no way around that, but there are two ways to deal with that. One is by using layer masks, the other is all through SimPE.

First, extract your alpha -- open the hair package in SimPE, right click the image, and select 'Export Alpha image'. This will give you a black and white image of the hair. You'll need this no matter what!

I only know how to apply layer masks in Photoshop. Applying an action will flatten it completely, so in the layers window, double click it. This will bring up a 'new layer' dialogue, just hit OK. Now click the layer in the layer window to select it, then push the 'layer mask' button at the bottom of the layers window (it looks like a gray box with a white circle in it). This will turn your layer into the preview image linked with an all-white layer. That's the 'mask' -- a part that tells the program what parts to hide (make transparent) and what to show. Black is completely transparent, white is completely opaque.

Now open your alpha in Photoshop. Press ctrl-a to select all, then ctrl-c to copy.

Switch over to your texture. In the layers menu, there should be tabs, one of which is labeled 'channels'. Click that -- you will see four channels labeled Red, Blue, Green, and Layer 0 Mask. Click Layer 0 Mask so only it is highlighted. It's still hidden, so click where it should have an eye icon to reveal it.

Now press ctrl-v. This should paste your alpha image into your layer mask. If it's working right, the image will show the black areas of the mask in shades of red. Switch over to the Layers tab and click the layer thumbnail to make the mask view go away. Press ctrl-d to make the selection box go away, then right-click the layer in the layers window, select apply layer mask -- and there, you have a transparent image. Save as png.
If you don't have an account you can create one now.
