It's a lot simpler if you don't start out all OVERAMBITIOUS like I did (convert! adjust! remap!), and choose a short hair mesh without animations. It also helps if you make a clear goal to start with and work toward that, rather than changing your mind every few steps.
I make my life a lot harder than it needs to be sometimes. :D
